Why you should wipe deleted file names

Deleting files using standard Windows operations, just marks corresponding entries in MFT (Directory entries for FAT) as unused, but this operation does not delete file contents as well as correponding MFT records (on NFTS) / Directory entries (on FAT) such as deleted file names and other attributes.

In some cases (e.g. if a file is small) MFT could store the actual file data (known as resident data) along with all the system data relating to the file.

How to wipe deleted file names from MFT (directory entries)

To delete the contents of previously deleted files, you should wipe free space. However it is not enough to securely delete all traces of deleted files as files names and other attributes are still stored in MFT. To permanently delete all traces of deleted files you should additionally wipe deleted file names stored in MFT for NTFS drives (directory entries for FAT).

Wipe MFT is a free tool that helps you wipe MFT free space (Directory entries) which stores names, dates, size and other attributes of deleted files.
